Apart from the official reviews in the workshop, do not forget to check the level of oil, coolant or brake fluid. Better safe than sorry.

The periodic review of the liquids of the car is fundamental in the maintenance of the vehicle.

Throughout the year, it is cold or hot, from time to time you should check the levels of the liquids of the car. It depends on them that the engine runs well and you do not have to visit the workshop ahead of time and with consequences, generally, more serious than desired.

OIL

The lubricant is one of the fluids of the car whose revision is more internalized. Who else who least knows the catastrophic consequences of not changing the oil or bringing the level below what is recommended (or above).

Therefore, in addition to replacing it when indicated by the manufacturer (between 5,000 and 30,000 kilometers, depending on the model), its level must be checked frequently. At least once a month and always before a long trip. And if the car is old, better every two weeks.

How to check the level?

1. Place the car in a flat and horizontal place and let the engine cool down, since the level is always higher at hot.

2. Remove the dipstick and clean it.

3. Re-insert the rod to the bottom and remove it. At the end of the dipstick there are two notches that indicate the minimum and maximum level: check where the oil mark is.

If the level is low ...

The most appropriate is to go directly to the workshop and ask for an oil change: cars, especially older vehicles, sometimes consume more lubricant than expected and it is convenient to make the change every few kilometers.

If the level is minimal, you can also pass the trance (although sooner or later you will have to go to the workshop) by adding some lubricant. It is important to know what oil grade they used last time to add one of the same class.

If the level is high ...

Direct to the workshop. There they will remove the excess and verify that this excess has not produced any breakdown due to excessive pressure.

REFRIGERANT

The coolant fulfills a fundamental mission among the liquids of the car: it circulates through the internal circuit of the engine and absorbs part of the heat generated by combustion, thus avoiding overheating that could be fatal. An excess of temperature could melt the pistons and even trigger a dangerous internal explosion.

The refrigerant is usually composed of distilled water and concentrated antifreeze, which also ensures that the liquid does not freeze and spoils the circuit in winter. In summary, the refrigerant must have a very high boiling temperature and a low freezing temperature, apart from anti-corrosive and antifouling properties.

It is worth checking it every 20,000 or 30,000 kilometers and replacing it (before it loses property) every 40,000 kilometers or every two years.

How to check the level?

As in the previous case, the car must be placed on flat and horizontal terrain and with the engine stopped and cold (otherwise, the liquid could be very hot and steam).

2. Locate the bottle: it is large, usually square and translucent. Two marks indicate the minimum and maximum levels.

If the level is low ...

As simple as taking a funnel and filling. You should use the one recommended by the manufacturer and never mix two different ones. If you do not find the one you need or are not sure what it is, fill it only with distilled water. If the level is very low and it is winter, lowering the concentration of antifreeze by pouring a lot of distilled water can be risky, so a complete replacement in the workshop may be appropriate.

If the level is high ...

  • Workshop. Because emptying the tank means searching (and releasing) the drain plug, located at the bottom of the radiator. And this operation can be dirty and cumbersome.

WINDSHIELD WATER

One of the least important car liquids at first sight, but that can also give you a dislike. Apart from the fact that a dirty windshield is dangerous (especially when the sun is up front), you may have problems with the ITV. They do not always put a pain to carry the empty tank, but sometimes yes, so it should be carried at least half full.

How to check the level?

Very easy: if you operate the lever and the windshield wipers move, but no water comes out, it is over. It also serves a simple observation of the deposit located under the hood, which is also translucent to verify how full it is.

If the level is low ...

When you have reached the previous point, fill in. It is simple.

1. Let the engine cool down so you don't get burned by touching a still hot part.

2. Locate the tank: it will be under the hood, usually on one of the sides and near the windshield (the cap has the windshield wiper drawing).

3. To fill, you usually need a funnel (or very good pulse) and a specific liquid, especially to prevent it from freezing at very low temperatures.

If the level is high ...

This can only happen if you go over when filling, so just pay attention.

BRAKE FLUID

It goes without saying that the brake is another of the car's hydraulic circuits that are essential for safety, so it should be checked periodically (a couple of times a year, for example). The change of liquid will be approximately every two years, since the humidity accelerates its deterioration and the boiling point is also reduced over time.

How to check the level?

1. With the engine cold, locate the tank. He wears a black cap with yellow letters.

2. Check that the level is between the maximum and minimum indicators.

If the level is low ...

There is no choice but to go to the workshop, because most often the brake pads are worn (which makes the level appear lower).

If the level is high ...

It will be strange that this happens, but we must also ask the expert.

STEERING LIQUID

If your car has hydraulic or electro-hydraulic power steering, you should check (at least once a year) the steering fluid.

How to check the level?

1. With the engine warm, locate the tank. It has a steering wheel engraved on the cap.

2. The same cap usually has the measuring rod incorporated. Clean it, as you did with the oil.

3. Re-insert the rod and, when removed, check that the level is between the maximum and the minimum

If the level is low ...

You can refill it yourself, always with the liquid recommended by the manufacturer.

If the level is high ...

In the very rare case of this happening, consult the workshop.
